The Kaordic Machine

The Kaordic machine was shown in 1989 at the Sveagalleriet in Stockholm. The work itself is a visual and actual application of chaos theory. Small changes in initial conditions, a condition at an arbitrarily chosen time produce large and in the long run unpredictable differences in the course. The installation was made up of constant, linear, circular and non-linear movements. The movement system of the installation is sabotaged and disrupted by small variations, mainly in the substrate to which the rotating graphite pin overreacts. Even in this installation, the logically constructed technology interacts with the irrational. Everything is made visible by the advance of the pen in the drawing on the circular paper surface. The overall figure on the drawing is predetermined and analogically programmed into a stylized form. It is systematically displaced on the circular surface. The whims in its path are impossible to predict. The quiet slow development of the drawing had a hypnotic and meditative effect. I had intended the installation to start with a white base and draw down an extremely diverse drawing. It would gradually draw on and over time cover and destroy its own drawing, until the surface becomes black.
