Civilzation II was inaugurated in 2001at Frösunda Torg in Solna. It represents a series of public sculptures in urban and park environments that I completed in 1998 - 2013. The first sculpture in this series was made in Hue, Vietnam in 1998.

 

Civilization II has a similar shape and size to the Hue sculpture. It consists of a large number of pieces of mostly black diabase stacked into a given shape.

 

The material consists of stone that other artists such as Walter De Maria and Ulrich Rückriem had scrapped.

I reshaped and recycled the material for my sculpture.

 

The construction technique means that it is possible to use end-radiating optical fibers that open into the surface of the sculpture. These are invisible in daylight and are activated when it is dark. It has sparkling and varying white light.

 

The sculptures take on a massively compact expression during the day and a more ethereal form dissolved during the dark hours.
